Whatever Happened To Manchester United's Manucho?

manchester united blog manucho For those of you who were wondering where the hell Manucho has gone then fear not. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has assured Angola star Manucho he's in his long-term plans.

The centre-forward has been linked with a permanent move to Le Havre, but Fergie says he is counting on Manucho among several of the club's top youngsters.

“Our pool of players is getting stronger as the younger lads mature and come into the squad, knowing they will perform. I am thinking of players like Jonny Evans, Rafael, Darron Gibson, Rodrigo Possebon, Danny Welbeck and Manucho. We have a good strong squad and I’m confident we have the men for the task. We are only handful of points behind the leaders and we have a good chance of winning the Premier League again.”.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Send Cristiano Ronaldo Home

cristiano ronaldo going home manchester united blog Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson may allow Cristiano Ronaldo to return home to Portugal until their January 11 clash with Chelsea.

The Times says Ferguson has often given his younger overseas players dispensation to return briefly to their homeland during the winter months, with Anderson and Carlos Tévez back in Brazil and Argentina respectively this week.

And now would appear the ideal time to allow Ronaldo a brief rest, particularly given that United’s next two matches are against Southampton in the FA Cup third round on Sunday and Derby County in the Carling Cup semi-final, first leg a week today before they face Chelsea at Old Trafford. Ronaldo may be involved against Southampton, but he is almost certain to sit out the Carling Cup tie.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Should Manchester United Hold On To Owen?

owen hargreaves knee injury surgery america manchester united blogIs Owen Hargreaves' ongoing knee problem going to force Sir Alex Ferguson to buy in January? What can Fergie do with the midfielder? We only just got rid of the injury prone Balsawood Man that is Louis Sahahaha and now we are lumbered with another one!

Hargreaves' recurring knee injury ruled him out for the rest of the season yesterday and while that comes as no great surprise, surely we must be asking ourselves is it worth going through the same old routine with Hargreaves as we had to endure with Saha.

Hargreaves will travel to the US to visit specialist Dr Steadman, the surgeon who has already operated on his right knee. This time he will have the same procedure carried out on his left knee.

The 27 year old has managed just 37 appearances since his £18m move from Bayern Munich. He has always been blighted by injury, which has started to restrict his opportunities in England's crowded midfield. He is an integral player for club and country and fans will be hoping for a speedy resolution, but this could be just one operation too many?

He has already had unsuccessful visits to specialists in London and in Sweden, sparking fears that his career may be cut short.

Ferguson is a big fan of Hargreaves but after just 3 games this season, will it force the club to move for a replacement in the next transfer window? Reports in this mornings newspapers have suggested that Lassana Diarra and Axel Witsel are high on the transfer wishlist of Sir Alex, but have United got enough in reserve? I believe Anderson has the abilities to be a long overdue successor to Roy Keane and you do wonder if the injury now to Hargreaves will force the boss to give the Brazilian the role.

Should United bring in a replacement for Hargreaves in January or can Fletcher, Possebon and Anderson do a job for Manchester United?

Gerrard Free Again - What Songs Will He Have On His i-Pod ?

manchester united blog steven gerrard arrestedSteven Gerrard knows how to entertain Manchester United fans. The Liverpool captain was arrested in a Merseyside bar.

Gerrard - who was released by police at 11.25 last night (Monday) - had been arrested with five other men after an alleged brawl in a Southport night club, during which a man suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital. The row allegedly began over the choice of music being played in the bar. They were arguing with the DJ over the matter, who, incidentally comes from Manchester.

The England player, who was thought to be out celebrating his club's 5-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday, is expected to be free to lead his side out to face Preston in the FA Cup next weekend, unless he is rested by manager Rafael Benitez. No other Liverpool players are thought to be among those being interviewed by police.

The FA and Liverpool have so far declined to comment but they are expected to treat this as a personal matter for Gerrard.

Liverpool lead the Premier League and after scoring two goals against Newcastle, Gerrard said that it was important to deal with the pressures that came with a title challenge.

Gerrard has been a key part of Liverpool's push for a first title in almost 20 years, having scored eight Premier League goals this season. He has also been an influential member of Fabio Capello's reinvigorated England side, who have made an unbeaten start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The midfielder has previously made the headlines over off-the-pitch events.

At the end of last year, Gerrard's wife, Alex Curran, was held as masked men burgled their house while he was on Champions League duty.

I have compiled a list of his favourite songs I imagine we might find on his i-pod since his release:

1. JAILHOUSE ROCK..! (ELVIS)
2. SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO NOW..!( THE CLASH)
3. SPECIAL BREW..! ( THE OLD BAD MANNERS TUNE)
4. HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME (BRITNEY SPEARS VERSION)
5. I DONT LIKE MONDAYS (THE 79 ORIGINAL)
6. LETS GO OUTSIDE (GEORGE MICHEAL)

Arsene Wenger - One Of The All Time Greats

manchester united arsene wenger unitedArsene Wenger sits on the bench at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff one Saturday in May. His team, Arsenal, are contesting another FA Cup final, their third in as many seasons. Out on the pitch his players are at it again, for one last time before the sun sets on another year. Thierry Henry receives the ball on the edge of the penalty area, waits for Dennis Bergkamp to make the run outside him on the right before sliding a pass into his path. Bergkamp twists and clips the ball back inside to Freddie Ljungberg, whose near-post shot bounces off a defender and into the path of Robert Pires. There is no other word. It is poetry - the metre and the rhythm, the beauty and the beat; France, Holland, Sweden, France; the blending of skill and athleticism and intuitive awareness that the players have of one another's movements.

On the bench Wenger watches, at once intensely involved and perfectly excluded. As the ball crosses the line he springs up and, walking towards the pitch, does his familiar celebration, elbows at his side, fists clenched and pumping discreetly. Then he applauds. Then he goes and sits down again. His is only a half -celebration, but then winning the much-eroded FA Cup is perhaps only a quarter triumph after the devastation of the preceding weeks, when Wenger's
world seems slowly, incomprehensibly, to have caved in.

To anyone accustomed to his body language, defined by its restraint, its marked lack of passion, it is as if Wenger had a personality transplant in the spring of 2003. For months Arsenal had played what may even have been the best football ever produced by a British club. Power, in Wenger's prediction, was sprinting south. And then they blew it, they blew their lead, and Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson urging them on like a whip-happy charioteer, remorselessly chased and chased and ground Arsenal down.

Few people had heard of Arsene Wenger when he came to Arsenal in 1996. He remains an enigma - a cultured, media-shy Frenchman who neither looks nor behaves like a football manager. But now he is probably one of the most influential figures in the English game.

In August 1996, the name Arsene Wenger meant absolutely nothing in north London. "Arsene Who?" ran the Evening Standard headline that greeted his appointment. It was the story of his life, from the moment he took charge of his own team at Nancy 12 years earlier. In every new job, he didn't just have to prove himself; he had to introduce himself. When Rioch was sacked, one of the papers had three or four names as a replacement. It was Venables, Cruyff and then at the end Arsene Wenger. Trust Arsenal to appoint the boring one that you haven't heard of !

Because they didn't know who he was, one Saturday two weeks before his arrival, Wenger appeared by live satellite link on the video screens at Highbury. They should have played it in the dressing room too. It was one thing for the club's most famous fan not to have heard of Wenger, quite another for the club captain. Tony Adams didn't know the new man from Adam.

There was a feeling of "who the fuck is he ?" and "what is he going to do ?" and "What is he ?". "Rioch had been sacked, caretaker manager Stewart Houston had left for Queens Park Rangers and Adams and Rice were "kind of just getting on with it", recalls Tony Adams. "I got a call from the chairman along the lines of, 'I hear the shit's hit the fan back there. Er, don't worry, rally the troops. Good man on his way. Be patient.' It was quite hilarious." Did he know anything about
Wenger ? "No." Literally the name meant nothing? "No. Nothing at all. He wasn't an English top-of-the-tree coach with proven experience. He wasn't an Alex Ferguson. He wasn't a renowned manager of that time - a George Graham."

Wenger's appointment was announced on August 20, he met the press on September 22 and took official charge on September 30, a Monday morning. "He arrived unnoticed at the training ground," Lee Dixon recalls. "A meeting was called, the players filed in and in front of us stood this tall, slightly-built man who gave no impression whatsoever of being a football manager."

It was an extremely precarious moment in Arsenal's history. With Manchester United now dominant, Arsenal had become entirely dependent on an impregnable defence and the goals of Ian Wright to keep them in contention. There was no reason why they couldn't have turned into Spurs after Rioch. But after the arrival of Wenger, people began to think it's part of the natural order of things that Arsenal and Manchester United were always one and two in the Premiership more or less every year. However, it was not in the natural order of things. It was entirely because of Arsene Wenger !

He doesn't buy success, that's easy to do. He cultures it, he finds the raw, basic talent and he nurtures it, takes care of it and produces some of the most amazing teams I have seen for very, very little money. If it were possible to turn back the clock and re-run his 12 years with Arsenal WITHOUT Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, Wenger would be one of the greatest managers that ever lived. It would have been Arsenal winning title after title and FA Cup after FA Cup. Sadly for Wenger though, Sir Alex Ferguson does exist and he has cast a shadow over what I believe to be one of the best managers ever to grace the English game.

That's Arsene Wenger.....Back To Home Page.....

Manchester United Need To Score More Or They'll Have Big Problems

I have this strange feeling that Manchester United's poor
form in
front of goal will damage their chances of a third
consecutive League
title. Every single year for the past
four years we have had a goal
difference second to none.
Despite creating several chances, United
needed a 69th-
minute goal from Dimitar Berbatov to squeeze past

relegation-threatened Middlesboroughat Old Trafford
and claim
their fourth 1-0 win in five League matches.

It's sad to say but players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo
continue to worry both me and Fergie. Even Berbatov has struggled
since his big money move from Spurs.

ronaldo

Lean spell: Cristiano Ronaldo contemplates his latest miss against
Middlesbrough

Ferguson said: "If we can’t take our chances, we will suffer for it. We
missed a lot of chances and that is a big worry. But Berbatov is a
marvellous player, and he was absolutely superb for us against Boro.
He took his goal very well.'

Sir Alex said about four weeks ago that if United can be within two
points of the top of the table come new year then they will be in
with a chance of winning their third consecutive title. Currently we
are 7 points adrift of The Bindippers but with two games in hand.

He added: "We are in a good position at the turn of the year. We
have two games in hand, both of which are at home, and it is going
to be a great run in. The important thing for us is to look after our-
selves and do our own job, and we will be okay."

berbatov

That's how it's done: Berbatov nets the winner against Middlesbrough

Emmanuel Pogatetz, who I class as an animal and a cheating slimy
git, grabbed Cristiano Ronaldo by the neck and wrestled him to the
ground. Nothing surprising really considering his past record.

Ferguson added: 'It seems Pogatetz grabbed him by the neck. It
happens all the time. There is jostling and jersey-pulling. Defenders
are getting away with murder.'

Pogatetz was already an unpopular figure at Old Trafford for a
dreadful tackle on United youngster Rodrigo Possebon in a Carling
Cup tie earlier in the campaign, but Middlesbrough manager Gareth
Southgate said: 'I heard a lot of noise and there was some finger-
pointing - but that’s all. The referee Martin Atkinson seemed com-
fortable with it. When teams are marking from corners there is
always a bit of contact.'

Typical Southgate nonsense. If it was one of his players and Rooney
had grabbed his neck the whole footballing world would be up in arms.
Because it is against Crsitiano Ronaldo then it seems to be fine to act
like this.

rooney

Wide of the mark: Wayne Rooney's goals have dried up

But back to my original point after this rant. If the goals don't start
flowing soon then I fear a problem come April or May. United in
the past have always held the advantage with this, and it is worth
an extra point on the run-in.

Dozing Berbatov Wins It For Manchester United Against Middlesborough

manchester united blog blackburn rovers berbatovManchester United continued their good form after returning from Japan by scraping past Middlesborough tonight. The one thing that has worried me all season was this Club World Cup. I had visions of United jetting off to Japan to take part in this competition and whilst they were away, Liverpool and Chelsea would both notch up wins leaving us with a mountain to climb. But that didn't happen. While United became World Champions both the leaders stuttered and gave United a much easier task than they could have been left with.

Happy days for us indeed. Since returning to the UK they have notched up two wins and both have been hard fought. Tonight Dimitar Berbatov dozed through 69 minutes of Manchester United's home game with Middlesbrough on Monday before scoring the only goal to keep the champions in touch with the Premier League leaders.

Berbatov appeared an uninterested, bored observer for much of a freezing night at Old Trafford as team mate Cristiano Ronaldo missed half a dozen chances to secure a lead against a Boro team who had not won in their seven previous games.

However, when the visiting defence failed to properly clear a Michael Carrick cross Berbatov was well placed near the penalty spot to steer it back past Ross Turnbull for the decisive goal.

United remain third in the standings on 38 points but with two games in hand on their three main rivals. Liverpool, who thumped Newcastle United 5-1 away on Sunday, lead the way on 45 points, with Chelsea second on 42.

Arsenal are fourth (35), ahead of Aston Villa (35).........the quadruple is still on !!!

Can Manchester United Lift The 'Impossible Quadruple' ?

manchester united blog quadruple alex fergusonIt is widely known that Manchester United have had a much harder start to the season than all their rivals. They have played all of the top ten teams AWAY from home and have had a trip to Japan to compete in the Club World Cup to contend with as well.

Despite this, United are within touching distance of the top of the league, they have a semi-final in the Carling Cup against Derby County and begin their FA Cup run against Southampton next week. A nice juicy clash with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan also awaits them in the last 16 of the Champions League too. So United are still battling on four fronts having won the World Club Cup and the Community Shield this season.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson believes winning four more trophies this season is not a "realistic" target.

"To win one major trophy is unusual but nice all the time, but there is no chance of winning all four competitions we are left in this season. It is appetising and we will have that opportunity if we are still in them all come March and April, but it is not realistic. I won't be making any ridiculous statements about winning the lot. We would have to be very lucky in terms of everyone still being fit and we have got a job to do in the league.

"Our start has been very difficult. Every game we have had after a European match has been away from home. And when we came back from Japan we were away again at Stoke on Boxing Day. We have also had away games against all the top sides, so our start has been satisfactory, but not perfect at the moment. We are in a very competitive league, but we still have a good chance of keeping our title."

They all said the 'Treble' was impossible.........is the 'Quadruple' impossible ?

Alexis Sanchez Declares His Desire To Play For Manchester United

manchester united blog alexis sanchez wants to play for manchester I reported on the possibility of Alexis Sanchez becoming a Manchester United player several months ago and he has himself declared his wishes to become a United player. The 20-year-old Chilean striker has become one of the most promising youngsters in Italian football, due to a number of impressive performances as Udinese’s number 11.

His nickname is "El Nino Maravilla" (The Wonder Boy), several high profile clubs within Italy and from around Europe have been taking a long hard look at him but his ambitions lie with Manchester United.

Speaking to Udineseblog.it he said: "I would like to play in the Premier League and, above all, at Manchester United, I like Manchester United, the way they play and they have great players.”

He began his professional career with the Chilean club Cobreloa. He played one season there before being signed by the Serie A team, Udinese. Udinese had to pay nearly $3 million for his signature. Colo-Colo then paid Udinese nearly $150,000 for his services in the upcoming Clausura tournament and the following Apertura tournament in the Liga Chilena.

He scored his first goal with Colo-Colo in the Copa Sudamericana 2006 against the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense on October 10 2006 in the David Arellano Stadium.

On March 12 2007,Sánchez hurt his toe and there were major fears that Sánchez's career may be over.

On March 20 2007 Sánchez made a miraculous recovery from his bad toe and scored a hat-trick in a Copa Libertadores group match versus Caracas.

On August 15, 2007 he was signed to River Plate on loan. Udinese has Alexis Sanchez valued at 20 million euros.

On July 22, 2008 he was greeted as a new reinforcement for Udinese, where he got together with his fellow partners in 2007 South American Youth Championship Mauricio Isla and Nicolas Corvetto. The young player has already played a couple of games, and has become popular with Udinese's fans, because of his trickery.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Have Four Players In L'Equipe Team Of The Year 2008

manchester united players l'equipe team of the year 2008 Four Manchester United players have been named in French newspaper L'Equipe's Team of the Year for 2008.

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Cristiano Ronaldo were all named in the XI by L'Equipe's team of journalists.

L'Équipe (French for "the team") is a French nationwide daily newspaper devoted to sports. The paper is noted for coverage of football, rugby, motorsports and cycling. Its ancestor was L'Auto, a general sports paper, whose name reflected not any narrow interest but the excitement of the time in car racing.

L'Auto originated the Tour De Frnace cycling stage race in 1903 as a circulation booster. The race leader's yellow jersey (maillot jaune) was instituted in 1919, probably to reflect the distinctive yellow newsprint on which L'Auto was published.

The XI are:

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) - Dani Alves (Barcelona), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Patrick Evra (Manchester United) - Xavi (Barcelona), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) - Fernando Torres (Liverpool), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan)

Manchester United Stars Purchase New Bentley Continental GT Speed

manchester united blog pla Three Manchester United players have gone carazy and spent £200,000 EACH on the new Bentley Continental GT Speed. Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar each treated themselves to a new car.

An Old Trafford source said: “The credit crunch doesn’t mean anything to these guys. If there is a new supercar out there they just have to have it. Ryan Giggs has been a Bentley owner for years so it is no surprise he would have gone for the latest model and Cristiano has an ever growing collection of cars.”

The Continental GT Speed is the most powerful production Bentley ever and the first to top 200mph (322km/h). A potent addition to the company's highly successful Continental series, the GT Speed extends the appeal of the Continental GT coupe to driving enthusiasts who place a high value on outright performance and agile handling.

The exterior style of the new Continental GT and GT Speed models is defined by a wider, lower air intake and more upright radiator grille that also provide increased airflow to the more powerful GT Speed. Its 600bhp (610PS) W12 engine develops 15 percent more torque and nine percent more power than the standard Continental GT, while engine efficiency is optimised by the use of lower friction, lighter-weight components and a new engine management system. The resultant performance is exceptional, with a top speed of 202mph (326km/h), a zero to 60mph sprint time of just 4.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5s) and effortless overtaking capability.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United "Primed To Take The Premier League Title" Claims Sir Alex

alex ferguson stoke city

SIR Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United are on course for another surge towards the Barclays Premier League title. Manchester United are, after all, renowned for their form once the Xmas and New Year celebrations are out of the way.

United's win against Stoke City was a gritty performance on Boxing Day, despite leaving it late to take all three points from the Britannia Stadium as Carlos Tevez converted Dimitar Berbatov's cross with seven minutes to play. The win kept Ferguson's reigning champions hot on the heels of Chelsea and Liverpool and the United boss expects his team to be much stronger in the New Year.

"If we could get to New Year's Day a couple of points adrift of the leaders we would be very happy, we expect to kick on. We'll give ourselves a great chance if we get into that position."

Ferguson was impressed with the way his players coped with the demands of playing a fired-up Stoke team just days after returning from winning the Club World Cup in Japan.

"Coming back from Japan we were worried about how it would affect the team but you could see their energy was good. There was no problem with that and they handled it very well,".

Ferguson admitted he was about to replace Tevez with South Korean winger Park Ji-Sung when the Argentine forward made the breakthrough.

"At that point I was saying to myself this could be a draw so I wanted Park on for some width. But Carlos scores important goals and he's come up trumps again."

The only downside of United's day was the absence of Rio Ferdinand. The England defender was forced to pull out just before kick-off with a recurrence of a long-term back injury.

"We have to get to the root of this because he has had this back problem too many times," Ferguson added. He'll be out against Middlesbrough on Monday. I think in maybe 10 days he should be OK.".....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Rio Ferdinand Out Of Manchester United Team For Ten Days

rio ferdinand back injury out for ten days manchester united Rio Ferdinand will be sidelined for up to 10 days after suffering a back injury while warming up for yesterday's match with Stoke City.

Alex Ferguson said: "Rio suffered a back spasm -- he has done it a few times this year -- and will miss Monday's match against Middlesborough. We have got to try and get to the bottom of the problem. But we will manage without him. Jonny (Evans) is an outstanding player. We are fortunate to have such a talented boy to call on. At 20 he shows such maturity. He reads the game well, he uses the ball well and his pace is good. He has all the attributes of a top player."

Talking about yesterdays result, Ferguson added: "You start to worry a bit as the second half looked a bit of a stalemate. Then Dimitar (Berbatov) showed great balance and turned the defender brilliantly before playing the ball across to Carlos (Tevez) to finish it off. We were delighted about that."

Ferguson was pleased with the way his side responded and shook off any lingering effects of jet lag.

"Hopefully we will look back and say this was a significant win for us. If we get to New Year's Day and are only a point or two away, then we will have a chance, it is not easy coming here. Stoke have beaten Arsenal and gone close against Chelsea and had some good results at home. Stoke are very resilient, determined and gutsy. However there is no question it was a sending off as it was a rash challenge by their player.".....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Graham Poll Says Manchester United Players Get Away With Murder

graham poll manchester united get away with murderGraham Poll speaking in The Telegraph about Manchester United said:

Supporters of less fashionable teams often complain that referees never miss their team's fouls, especially when they're up against a 'big' club.

On the evidence of yesterday at the Britannia, they have a case.

Wayne Rooney, in retaliation to the close attentions of Abdoulaye Faye, appeared to throw an arm to keep his opponent at bay and was not punished.

Then, Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to retaliate to a challenge and, again, escaped the attentions of the officials.

Referees, when questioned, just say that they did not see such situations.

It was unfortunate for Stoke that Chris Foy was not unsighted for either of Andy Wilkinson's challenges - and rightly dismissed the Stoke man.

Come on Mr Poll, your referees make shocking decisions week in and week out, surely you can't blame Manchester United for that!!

At least Mr Poll is consistent and he speaks bullshit through his arse on a regular basis !!!.....

Another Late show By Manchester United As Tevez Nets The Winner

manchester united beat stoke city tevez winnerCarlos Tevez secured three Barclays Premier League points for Manchester United in another late show against 10-man Stoke at the Britannia Stadium with the only goal of the game seven minutes from time.

The Argentinean was set up by substitute Dimitar Berbatov whose volley to the far post allowed Tevez to tap
home from close-range. The match had been well contested but United always looked the most likely to get the breakthrough and there task was made easier when Andy Wilkinson was sent off for the home side.

United were without captain Rio Ferdinand who was injured in the pre-match warm up and was replaced by Jonny Evans. Evans allowed Ricardo Fuller to get away from him in the opening moments of the match but the Potters striker blazed over the bar.

Manchester United then took control of the match but were met by some solid defending by Stoke who were prepared to get men behind the ball.
Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney both went close with headers but United becoming visibly frustrated by their inability to break down the Stoke defence.

At the start of the second half Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen was twice called into action but managed to save well from Tevez and later from Paul Scholes.
Fuller went close again for Stoke as they had a rare foray into United territory.

The striker almost benefitted from a mix up between Edwin van der Sar and John O'Shea on the edge of the box but the United duo managed to clear.

A game that had experienced some niggling incidents – notably involving Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo – then exploded once more as Wilkinson clattered into the back of Ronaldo and was sent off for a second-bookable offence. Alex Ferguson brought Berbatov on and his presence seemed to lift the visitors.

The Bulgarian headed over the bar soon after coming on before setting up Tevez for the winner seven minutes from full time.
Gary Neville crossed the ball which Berbatov collected and he volley on towards the far post where Tevez was lying in wait.

A Year To Remember For Manchester United

As Sir Alex Ferguson watched Ryan Giggs sprint towards the jubilant Manchester United supporters packed into one end of Wigan's JJB Stadium, a look of relief spread across his face.

Giggs had just scored the goal that wrapped up United's 17th English league title and their 10th during Ferguson's reign.

Despite holding a substantial lead over their London rivals at one stage, United had been made to sweat all the way to the finish line by Chelsea and eventually ended only two points clear.

Taking the title by such a narrow margin could be a sign of things to come in the Premier League as the global credit crunch begins to level the playing field.

United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will all finish the year at the top end of the table again, but the emergence of Aston Villa as serious challengers to the big four underlines the closing gap between the league's superpowers and the chasing pack.

That Chelsea will start 2009 firmly in the title race is no surprise, but there are signs that the financial meltdown is starting to make life difficult for Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Scolari made an impressive start after replacing Avram Grant as Chelsea boss, but the Brazilian, who was furious that Manchester City out-bid the Blues for Robinho on transfer deadline day, has presided over a series of spluttering performances in recent weeks.

To make matters worse, Scolari has been told he must sell before he can buy after owner Roman Abramovich called a halt to the extravagant spending that has marked the Russian's time at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea aren't alone in tightening their belts and only Manchester City, backed by their Abu Dhabi-based billionaire owners, will buck the trend and pay big money during the transfer window.

The financial implications of relegation from the Premier League are too catastrophic to contemplate now and inevitably chairmen are getting twitchy.

When Paul Ince was sacked by Blackburn after only 17 matches in charge, he became the sixth top-flight boss to lose his job this season.

Winning the League Cup in February wasn't enough to save Juande Ramos as Tottenham's form collapsed.

Harry Redknapp, tempted by a crack at his first big club, left Portsmouth to replace the Spaniard and sparked a remarkable revival, while Kevin Keegan's second coming at Newcastle ended in acrimonious circumstances.

On the field, the Premier League still has much to commend it. Giggs' goal at Wigan was the prelude to an even more dramatic Champions League final penalty shoot-out win against Chelsea in Moscow 10 days later that capped one of United's greatest seasons.

That double triumph could be the start of another glorious era for United, but before the champagne corks had even stopped popping, Cristiano Ronaldo, whose 42 goals had played such a key role in United's success, took the fizz out of their celebrations by unsuccessfully pushing for a move to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has cut a forlorn figure ever since and his erratic form in the second half of 2008 has added to the impression that he is still at United on sufferance only.

But Ferguson's men still ended the year newly crowned as FIFA's Club World Cup winners and returned from Japan with Liverpool and Chelsea within touching distance.

The most encouraging trend of the year has to be the way newly-promoted Hull and Stoke have managed to make the critics eat their words.

After Derby's relegation in May with 11 points - an English top-flight record low - Stoke and Hull and were widely regarded as certainities for relegation. But both are clear of the bottom three and, not only was Hull's win at Arsenal was one of the most memorable of the year, it also contributed to the spectacular outburst from Gunners captain William Gallas a few weeks later that revealed the extent of Arsene Wenger's problems at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester United Receive An Apology From The FA After Evidence From The Patrice Evra Hearing Is Leaked

Manchester United have received an apology from the FA, which is as rare as rocking horse shit, following the publication of evidence from Patrice Evra's controversial disciplinary hearing.

United were furious that full-back Evra was punished for clashing with Chelsea groundstaff at Stamford Bridge last season, and angry the details were released before they even decided whether to appeal.

The FA branded defender Gary Neville, who was at the flare-up, "abusive" in a damning report into the incident.

Sir Alex Ferguson's No.2, Mike Phelan, was called an "unreliable" witness by the FA, who levelled the same charge at Evra's "exaggerated" version of events, effectively branding United liars.

United, who won't appeal Evra's four-game ban, welcomed the apology and declared the matter "closed".

Typical rubbish from the FA and all the clowns who work there....Back To Home Page

That Was The Best Manchester United Moment From 2008

manchester united blog john terry penalty miss champions league moscowThere was a great deal to savour in last season's Champions League final – so why is the abiding image of John Terry's slip as he took his penalty in the decider, and the ball's subsequent skid off a post to what Manchester United hailed as safety and Chelsea gloomily accepted as oblivion?

It was not, after all, the end of the story; but for Nicolas Anelka's subsequent failure to beat Edwin van der Sar, the decider might have gone on long beyond 1.34 on a Moscow morning. Yet, because Terry seemed the very heart of Chelsea, the driving force through a campaign that only notionally had been led by the Israeli coach Avram Grant, his miss stuck in the mind.

We have witnessed previous instances of icons falling short from 12 yards. To name just a few who comfortably outrank Terry, Michel Platini, Zico and Socrates frustrated in the magnificent 1-1 draw between France and Brazil in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the 1986 World Cup (France won the decider but lost limply to the Germans in the semi-finals) and watched Franco Baresi and Roberto Baggio clear the Brazilian bar at the end of the goalless 1994 final in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile you could imagine Cristiano Ronaldo winking. The young man destined to pick up just about every trophy going in 2008, individual or team, might himself have proved the focus of anguish for, after putting United in front with a gorgeous header and proceeding to torment Michael Essien, he had his penalty saved by Petr Cech. Anderson and Ryan Giggs then kept United alive until the time came for Anelka.

The Frenchman had declined to take a kick when Grant was asked to nominate his initial five. A 115th-minute sub after Didier Drogba's dismissal, Anelka had not felt ready to face Van der Sar. Yet he had been on longer than Anderson, whose penalty had raged past Cech.

Penalty deciders may not be football, but they are drama. At first you wonder if the victims will ever get over it. But they do. Zico, surely one of the greatest players never to win a World Cup, has seldom been out of work as a manager. Gareth Southgate, whom Terry Venables so heart-warmingly ran to console after his miss ended Euro 96 for England, is making his way at Middlesbrough.

Terry's tears have dried in next to no time – though you may see a couple more if redemption comes at the end of this season.

Thanks From Carly

Sir Alex: "Manchester United Don't Need Any More Players"

manchester united blog alex ferguson sign players Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't see the need to make signings in January. Which is good news really. I'm of the opinion that the team we have right now can go on to do great, great things. But keep adding to it and taking away from it and they will take forever to gel into a complete unit.

Fergie said: "I do not think there will be any January transfers. I am happy with what I have got. We are probably going to bring back a couple of young players who have been on loan. That may just give us extra protection. We took 23 players to Japan and they are very substantial players. I would be happy to play any one of them. Winning the competition was a great boost to the club and the players. It was a great achievement and the important thing was they played well. They showed good enthusiasm through the matches and good concentration. We have come through it well.".....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Vidic Deserved To Go

vidic sent off in world club cup manchester united According to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Nemanja Vidic deserved his red card in the World Club Cup final.

Vidic was sent off after elbowing Claudio Bieler and the upshot of this will be at least a one match European ban and that could be increased to three matches but Fergie has declared he was in agreement that the referee had very little choice but to issue a red card.

Speaking to Sky Sports Sir Alex said: "We have been informed if there is a suspension it will be European Cup, it was a soft sending off. But it depends how Fifa interpret it and how Uefa act in terms of the information they get. He didn't swing an elbow but he gave the referee no chance. He was correct to produce the red card. Vida is disappointed but he gave the referee no option. We were in a comfortable situation too. The two centre-backs were having their easiest game for weeks."

Vidic will now miss the first leg of United’s crucial Champions League clash with Inter in the New Year and possibly more....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Champions Of England, Champions Of Europe And Now Champions Of The World

What a year ! Manchester United Champions of England in March, Champions of Europe in May and now in December Champions of the World.

Although it must be said that this competition does not have the greatest of reputations or the most prestigious of following, but at the end of the day, it is the best from Europe against the best from all around the world. United came out on top so there we have it, Champions of the World. So that's a total of four trophies for the year if you include the Community Shield.

The team Fergie fielded was: Van der Sar; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Carrick, Anderson; Park, Rooney, Ronaldo; Tevez.

The guys from Ecuador seemed very keen and fit but they didn't offer much by way of creativity and to be honest United should have buried them in the first half but missed a few good chances.

Vidic got his marching orders in the 50th minute and that was a very dubious decision.

This was Evra's last game before he begins his four match ban.

The goal came in the 73rd minute. Carrick's picked out Ronaldo on the edge of the box who sidefooted the ball to Rooney on the left who took a touch then fired low into the far corner of the net. A great goal and very well deserved.

So we are now officially world champions but was there ever any doubt?

Fraizer Campbell WILL Return To Manchester United

I hope the Spurs fans are not too attached to Frazier Campbell because Sir Alex has decided that after his loan spell expires he will be returning to Manchester United. The England Under 21 international striker is on a season long loan deal at White Hart Lane although United do have an option to recall the player in January.

"Fraizer will come back here, there is no question about that, the idea for him was to get some experience, so it has been good for him in that respect. He has produced some fantastic performances for Tottenham and I am delighted for the boy because he is going to be a good player. "His future is here."

I for one am happy with this news......Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Draw A Blank And Now It's Off To Japan

manchester united blog spurs 0-0 gomesFOR once Heurelho Gomes left White Hart Lane a hero as his last-minute save denied Manchester United a vital win at Tottenham. So often he is the clown prince of goalkeepers and for once he actually managed to string together some very good saves without matching them with some gormless errors as is his wont.

As United desperately searched for a winner to ensure they left for Club World Cup duty in happy mood, the Brazilian produced a fingertip save to turn away a Ryan Giggs free-kick that was going to creep in. Man of the match was probably Gomes.

This game has probably left United rueing their failure to take advantage of second-half superiority and opened the door for Chelsea to surge clear in the Barclays Premier League title race by beating West Ham this afternoon.

Dimitar Berbatov had a frustrating time on his return to White Hart Lane and Cristiano Ronaldo had the ball in the net but saw his effort ruled out for handball.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Berbatov Braced For The Abuse

berbatov returns to spurs with manchester united No doubt today Dimitar Berbatov will receive a barrage of abuse and a hostile reception from the Spurs fans. I'm not sure why they would want to do that. It was their club Spurs who chose to sell him to United. It's not unlike the Michael Carrick deal. They sold Carrick to United because they wanted £18m instead. Now they sold Berba to us and pocketed £30.75m and got Frazier Campbell into the deal. They didn't have to do it, so the fans should be channelling their abuse at Daniel Levy who authorised the sales I think.

Sir Alex has been speaking on the subject on the eve of the game: “He’s [Berbatov] going to get the reception we expect in the modern day. I mentioned last week about the change in supporters’ participation in football. So as Berbatov well knows he is going to get a lot of abuse from the fans. I don’t think you will change it. It is modern society. It’s because Berbatov was coming to Manchester United. If he had been going anywhere else there wouldn’t have been so much of a furore. For some reason they still regret selling Michael Carrick to us — that’s their biggest problem. But they wanted to sell him to us. They can’t blame us.”

Daniel Levy did a good job stretching out the Berbatov deal for a full year. Then getting Campbell thrown in too was a good move.

Ferguson said: “They milked it well that last day — they milked it very well and they got Fraizer Campbell into the bargain. They got a good deal. They can’t complain about that.” .....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Kasper Risgard Says Rooney Should Not Be Suspended For The 'Stamping' Incident

Kasper Risgard has been talking about the 'stamping incident' involving Wayne Rooney and himself earlier this week in the Manchester United 'v' Aalborg Champions League game.

Risgard (pictured left) departed from Old Trafford with some stud marks on his chest but he says he does not think Rooney deserves to be suspended or punished further for the incident.

UEFA will study film of the incident on Monday before deciding on what action to take, but Risgard said: “I heard UEFA is looking at this but I don’t think Rooney should be suspended. I haven’t seen the situation on TV yet as we had our Christmas party the day after the match but I can understand it looks bad on TV. It’s what happens in intensive matches. Wayne came up to me immediately and apologised. I appreciated that. I have nothing against him.”

It's quite refreshing to see a guy with this attitude after an incident of this nature. I don't say what Rooney did was right, but the Dane seems to be taking a low key, mature approach to the incident.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Park Ji-Sung On The Verge Of His Century

manchester united park ji-sung 100 appearancesPark Ji-sung, who receives very little attention for the great efforts he makes for Manchester United and who also takes quite a lot of criticism, is on the verge of reaching the great milestone of 100 appearances for the team should he make an appearance against Spurs this weekend, which seems likely.

So far this season he has made 16 appearances, his best total yet in a season and despite the strength in depth of Manchester United's midfield, he has managed to force his way into keeping a regular place in the line up.

Personally, I love the guy and his work rate but most of all I admire him for his attitude. He wont ever give up chasing the ball and more often than not he wears down the opposition, continually snapping at their heels. For a defender he must be a complete nightmare to play against, he wont allow anybody time on the ball. In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo might like to take a leaf out of his book and get some work done.

Speaking on MUTV this week he said: "I'm so happy with the way things are going this season. I enjoy playing and I've been involved a lot in the first team, I need to prove what I can do and I'm going to keep doing my best."

That's all we can ask of any player and I hope we see the likes of Ji-Sung Park on many more occasions. I imagine the opposing defenders think the opposite to me, and that's a good thing.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Carrick Convinced Manchester United Are In Good Shape To Catch The Leaders

Michael Carrick is of the same opinion as me and is convinced Manchester United, narrow winners over struggling Sunderland, can chase down Liverpool and Chelsea in the title race. The reigning champions were staring down the barrel of a yawning eight-point gap between them and Rafa Benitez's side until Nemanja Vidic's last-gasp winner against Sunderland last weekend.

The victory means they are just six points adrift of the top, but with a game in hand.

They also have the prospect of a much easier second half of the season in which they will face all their title challengers at Old Trafford.

Midfielder Carrick has only known success since moving to United for £18m in 2006, winning two titles and the Champions League and he has no doubts he can make it a hat-trick of titles, even if Sir Alex Ferguson's side are in the unusual position of being one of the chasing pack.

"It's a tough challenge to win the league any way, we've done it from in front before, so we'll try to do it from behind. That's what it's all about. It's always a challenge. We want to keep the run going that we started. We're playing pretty good stuff - it's just a case of things not dropping for us at times. But a win is a win and we can move on now. There is a growing sense that United's title challenge is gathering momentum, having picked up 10 points from a possible 12 since defeat to Arsenal last month.

With Liverpool and Chelsea faltering in recent weeks, it has allowed Ferguson's side to close the gap at the top and leave them poised for a concerted charge in the New Year.

Carrick continued: "Even without Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal winning, it was important we won the game, it was very late, but I think we deserved a win, you can't argue about that. The way it came was very exciting, but we should have killed it off a lot earlier than that. Everyone will do well to go the rest of the season without dropping points, it is a case of who can be the most consistent. We feel we've got the right players to do it, but only time will tell. We believe we are capable of winning the league for certain." .....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

All We Are Saying Is Give Berba A Chance

Some Manchester United fans have been calling Dimitar Berbatov by a new name, "Dimitar Veron" in a rather pathetic reference to £28m misfit Juan Veron. These will be the same pathetic fans who will be there basking in any future glory and declaring Berba a hero when he comes good. They piss me off with their 10-game judgements of a guy who is playing in a new team, in his first season. These so called fans are probably the same sad assholes who booed Capello's first game after a whole 28 minutes !!!

Paddy Crerand has been defending Berba while talking on MUTV: "That's totally unfair, he has not scored many but he's created plenty and that's just as valuable. I have heard the grumbles from the fans but it's too early for that. I think he's a wonderful player. Some players can do with one pass what others can't do with 90 minutes of running around dementedly. People have judged Berbatov against the industry of people like Tevez and that's unfair. They are different players. But Berbatov will come good. Just wait and see."

I couldn't have put it better myself. Give him a chance, even if it takes a whole season, trust me, he will be a legend like Eric Cantona. Us Eastern Europeans have to stick together so I am the biggest Berbatov fan in the whole world right now and I'll stick up for him no matter what !!!!!!

Edwin Van Der Sar Signs A One Year Contract With Manchester United

manchester united edwin van der sar contract The agent of 'Ageless' Edwin van der Sar has confirmed reports the goalkeeper is set to sign a new 12-month deal with Manchester United. Despite speculation the 38-year-old could retire at the end of the season, van der Sar has previously insisted he is no hurry to hang up his gloves.

This comes just a few months after Van Der Sar came out of international retirement to rescue The Netherlands as they faced a goalkeeping crisis. Vand der Sar's representative, Rob Jansen, has now announced he has been in discussions with United for "a couple of weeks" regarding fresh terms - and that agreement has now been reached.

Speaking to ANP Jansen said: "Manchester United will make it known officially on Friday. We have already been in talks about a new contract for a couple of weeks. Now we have reached an agreement. It is for one year. What will happen after that, I don't know."

Van der Sar joined Manchester United from Fulham in a £5million deal in 2005 when we were facing a keeper crisis after the departure of Peter Schmeichel six years previously. He will remain in my memories for the save he made from Nicolas Anelka in the Champions League Final which won it for us. He was also instrumental in United retaining the Premier League title.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

A 2-2 Draw With Aalborg That Sees Manchester United Top Their Group But Rooney Faces A UEFA Ban

Wayne Rooney is in line to miss both legs of United's last 16 knockout tie in the Champions League if Uefa decide to investigate allegations that he stamped on an Aalborg player in midweek.

Kasper Risgard claims that Rooney jumped on his chest on Wednesday night and UEFA have responded with the following statement from Rob Faulkner, a UEFA spokesman: "The normal procedure is that we look at the reports from the referee and the match delegate and decide whether to open a disciplinary case, if it is seen to be blatant, if we decide it's a case of serious foul play and the referee has completely missed it, it will be considered by our disciplinary committee."

Uefa's control and disciplinary body next meets on February 13. If Rooney is charged then he is expected to receive an immediate two-match ban.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Office Of Fair Trading Investigating Manchester United Ticket Prices

Here is something rather interesting from Sports Illustrated

Manchester United is being investigated by Britain's competition watchdog after fans of the English champions complained about a sharp rise in ticket prices and that season ticketholders were being forced to buy tickets for matches they did not want to see.

Representatives from the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) met with officials from the Office of Fair Trading on Wednesday and were told an investigation had begun into its claims that the club's pricing policy violates competition law.

"It's an abuse of their dominant market position," MUST chief executive Duncan Drasdo said Thursday.

MUST has received 35,000 complaints from fans about United's requirement that season ticket holders purchase additional tickets for non-Premier League matches, including the FA Cup and Champions League. They also complained about ticket price rises, with the cost of some season tickets rising by as much as 60 per cent since the 2004-05 season.

Before the compulsory cup ticket plan was introduced in 2007, season tickets were only for league matches. The club responded to fans' anger by exempting League Cup matches from 2008-09 season ticket packages.

"We're delighted that the OFT have chosen to launch an investigation into this matter," Drasdo said. "We're confident that the level of political support we're gathering will ensure that the Fair Deal for Fans campaign now goes beyond United and beyond our compulsory Cup ticket scheme.

"Huge ticket prices and the systematic exploitation of loyal supporters affect many fans at clubs throughout all the divisions."

In a dossier sent to the OFT last month, MUST claimed that a season ticket that cost 532 pounds ($795) in 2004-5 is now priced at 912 pounds ($1,364) -- before cup matches are factored in.

"The automatic cup scheme seems a pretty clear-cut case of unfair practices, and we were glad to learn that the OFT will be looking into it," said lawmaker Alan Keen MP, who is chairman of the All-Party Football Group. "But now it's up to politicians to use the various tools at our disposal to broaden this campaign and get a fair deal for all fans."

Sir Alex Stressed About His Injury List Ahead Of Spurs Game

Sir Fergie has announced he is not a happy chappy with regard to injuries etc etc in the days before Manchester United's trip to White Hart Lane. Their last Premier League game before jetting off to Tokyo for the World Club Championship.

He was seen to be shuffling his team around for the midweek draw with Aalborg on account of injuries and just to add insult to injury, Rio Ferdinand suffered a setback. Former Tottenham stars Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov are doubts too for the game. However, Sir Alex is hopeful he has the squad to contend with the issues.

Speaking to Setanta Sports News Sir Alex said: "Berbatov is still a problem, Michael Carrick has a thigh injury and we are hoping he will be alright, that’s why I wasn’t prepared to risk Fletcher tonight. The plan was always to play Ryan for 45 minutes because I don’t know what my midfield options are going to be on Saturday. I brought Scholes on at half-time to give him 45, I don’t think he is ready to play 90 minutes at the moment. I had these issues about the midfield area as I don’t know if Carrick is going to be fit, I don’t know if Berbatov is going to be fit. Rio Ferdinand picked up a back spasm again, so that is a concern for us too. With the squad we’ve got I hope we can cope but I’d rather not have them.”.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Adem Ljacic To Join Zoran Tosic In Switch From Partizan Belgrade To Manchester United

manchester united transfers adam ljacic adem ljacic zoran tosic As I suspected in one of my earlier posts here Manchester United have also signed Adem Ljacic in a double transfer deal with Zoran Tosic. Tosic was cleared for a work permit 2 weeks ago in London, now we await the same application by Ljacic which should also go smoothly leaving the pair free to join Manchester United in the January transfer window.

The highly-rated Serbs will link up with compatriot Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford in 2009 after agreement was reached with their club. Sir Alex Ferguson sees the wide players as useful additions to his squad, although teenager Ljajic is remaining at Partizan until the end of the campaign. The players travelled to Manchester after the match against Vojvodina and Tosic is expected to put pen-to-paper on his contract, which will start from January.

Tosic said in a recent interview: "I'm going to Manchester to do a medical exam, but I will return in three days, I hope everything will be okay, but I must confess that it's hard to leave my club Partizan. When I was replaced in the game against Vojvodina, it was so strange and a hard feeling. I sat on the bench any said to myself this could be my last game for Partizan. But I hope that I will return one day. Of course, there is a big feeling of pride, I'm off to sign for the biggest club in the world, which is my favourite from my early years. My goal is to continue progress as footballer and I want to show Manchester United that my transfer wasn't a bad thing."

Ljacic said of his impending move: "I was in Manchester once as a guest, I had a chance to look at how things are going on in a big club and now I will have another look. I'm staying in Partizan at least until the end of the season and then we will see what happens."

Ljacic is a highly thought of attacking or right midfielder for Partizan, considered one of Serbia's biggest talents and his abilities have led to him being nicknamed Little Kaka.

Ljajić made an appearance for Partizan in the first leg of the 2nd qualifying round of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League on July 29, 2008, entering the match as a second-half substitute. He made a second substitute appearance in the second leg and another substitute appearance in the second leg of the 3rd qualifying round. He is the first Partizan player to wear the number 22 since Sasa Ilic left in 2005.

The 17 year-old midfielder had recent trials at Old Trafford, but it's emerged Real Madrid have also been in contact. Manchester United remain in the boxseat for Ljajic, however, with Partizan eager to secure a relationship with the European champs

Manchester United Should Be World Champions Barring A Miracle

manchester united blog world club cup tokyo japan 2008Manchester United jet off to Tokyo early next Monday in a quest to become the World Club Champions. Why they would want to do such a thing is beyond me but they have taken the decision to do so.

Back in 1999 when United won it, the only British team to have done so I might add, the competition was a one match competition between the best of South America and the Champions of Europe. But now, nine years after United last won it, the cup has taken the form of a seven team knockout tournament.

By the time Manchester United first step out onto the pitch, Waitakere United from New Zealand should be back home in New Zealand already, along with two other teams.

Sepp Blatter is really keen to make this tournament work but swathes of empty seats have not helped FIFA's case in former competitions and Thursday's curtain raiser between Waitakere and Adelaide United in Tokyo hardly sets pulses racing.

AC Milan broke Europe's Club World Cup jinx by beating Argentina's Boca Juniors 4-2 in last year's final after Barcelona and Liverpool had failed in 2005 and 2006.

"We're the only British team to have won it," said United manager Alex Ferguson, whose side face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at the weekend before jetting to the Far East.

"I consider that to be one of the club's greatest achievements."

Ecuador's LDU are likely to be United's biggest threat after becoming the first team from their country to win South America's Libertadores Cup.

The Quito-based side face the winners of the first quarter-final between Mexico's Pachuca and Al Ahly of Egypt.

Fergie's boys, currently six points adrift in the Premiership, start their campaign on December 18th in the second semi-final which should, in theory, be against Gamba Osaka of Japan and a defeat against them is unthinkable for Fergie!

Barring a rather odd result in the other semi-final United should meet up with Ecuador's LDU in the final. They became the first side from Ecuador to win the Coa Libertadores hence their participation in the competition.

The form book says this is a win for United but as we all know, things can go wrong in a big way with these trips to Japan......Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Eric Djemba-Djemba Is Wanted By West Ham, God Help Them!

Former Manchester United man Eric Djemba-Djemba, who is so bad they named him twice, claims West Ham are interested in bringing him back to England.

The Cameroon midfielder claims he had a bad time in England. Well Eric, it's not half as bad as the time we had when we had to watch you. He joined United in 2003 ish and made a complete pigs ass of his time with them before moving on to Aston Villa and proving himself to be even worse than originally feared. So bad in fact, Villa terminated his contract.

I still can't believe Fergie parted with £3.5m for him but hey, every manager is allowed a mental lapse I guess. Djemba-Djemba has got his career back on track at Danish side Odense, who like him are so bad they should have called themselves Odense-Odense. Reports today have arisen which hint that West Ham are watching him. God that must be torture for their scout !!

The 27-year-old admits he would be interested in a move back to England as he feels he has a point to prove. Yeah right Eric, what you really mean is they will pay you silly money for being a complete arse. Tell the truth will you.

"I am having a good season. I lost my way a bit when I signed for Manchester United," Djemba-Djemba told skysports.com. "However, I am a good player, you don't play alongside Roy Keane and Paul Scholes if you are a bad player. I heard West Ham is interested and that means I am having a good season. I have unfinished business with the Premier League, so who knows?"It would be good to go back there and prove myself."

I think it would be a bloody miracle myself but good luck Eric-Eric Djemba-Djemba and West Ham-West Ham, you'll both need it. I can't wait to see who cracks first......Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Each And Every One Of Us

.........should realise how lucky we have been to see the greatest manager ever to walk the planet, manage the club we all follow - Manchester United..

United did the double last year !! Champions of England and Champions of Europe but no one seems to have celebrated it or even recognised the fact they did it. Probably because we have had to put up with the precocious antics of Ronaldo, then listen to the idiot Sepp Blatter declare all players are becoming slaves, albeit on £100,000 per week !! Then we had Euro 2008 followed by The Beijing Olympics and voila, here we are, another season.

I hear a lot of people putting Sir Fergie down, pushing aside his records and all he has achieved with United. I think it's an English thing. They gave Capello 28 minutes into his first game with England before booing them !! They love failure for some reason they even court it. They expect to fail, then they fail, then they get bitter because they failed. In the same vein, they wont recognise anything Fergie does until he is long gone !!

This is sad, a great shame. The simple truth is, no matter who believes it, Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson CBE, is the greatest football coach/manager to ever walk this planet it's as simple as that and there is no argument possible to even contest it !

In statistical terms, Ferguson's career is, quite simply, incredible and would be so even if it were fiction. The end of last season brought him a tenth English league championship in 21 seasons as United's manager. No other manager in English history even comes close: Bob Paisley won six with Liverpool, Matt Busby five with United and Herbert Chapman four with Arsenal and Huddersfield in the 1930s. If we look outside England, Rinus Michels won five league championships (4 with Ajax and one with Barcelona) whilst Fabio Capello won seven (4 at AC Milan, 2 at Real Madrid and another at Roma; another two at Juventus were taken off him because he CHEATED !!!

Only in Scotland is Ferguson's achievement matched: Jock Stein, his friend and mentor, led Celtic to 11 Scottish titles. All due respect to Scotland and their FA, but it's not quite as competitive up there so I personally think Fergies achievements are a lot better.

In all, United have won 702 (58%) of the 1210 league games played under Ferguson to the end of May 2008. That surpasses even the record of Matt Busby: 576 (50%) wins out of 1141 games. And Ferguson's teams lost only 18% of their competitive games, compared with 26% under Busby. Since the inception of the Premier League, Ferguson's record has been even more remarkable, beyond belief in fact.

In the 16 years of the Premiership, United have totalled 155 more league points than Arsenal, their nearest challengers, 221 more than Chelsea and 244 more than Liverpool. That's nearly 10 points a season better than Arsenal on average, nearly 14 points better than Chelsea and more than 16 points better than Liverpool - astonishing margins. In the process, United also played the more attractive football consistently, averaging 1.97 goals per game (compared with 1.69 for Arsenal, 1.58 for Chelsea, and 1.6 for Liverpool) and defended better (conceding 0.87 goals per game compared with 0.88, 0.98 and 0.98 respectively for their main rivals).

If all that were not enough, Ferguson has also brought United two European Cups, a European Cup-Winners Cup, five FA Cups (a record for a manager) and two League Cups, 20 major trophies in all. Against that, Michels won a total of 14, Paisley 13, Capello 9, Busby 7 and Chapman 6. But there's more. Before joining United in 1986, Ferguson led Aberdeen to 3 league championships, 4 FA Cups, one League Cup and a European Cup-Winners Cup in Scotland.

There's also the matter of two European Super Cups (one with each club) and an Intercontinental Cup (United became, so far, the only English winners of that trophy). That's 32 major trophies overall, ahead even of Stein's 29 in Scotland (and as I said achieved in a much tougher competitive environment). Along the way, there have been three English League and FA Cup doubles (the first to do it twice and then three times), and one League and European Cup double. Above all, in 1999 Ferguson led United to the treble of League championship, FA Cup and European Cup, the single greatest achievement by any club in English football history and something unmatched in Europe's main leagues (England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France).

You could not make it up. However much partisanship might colour our perceptions of the relative merits of the great managers, indisputably Ferguson stands pre-eminent in the history of English and European football. Yet statistics do not give us the full substance of the man. It is all too easy to forget, that Ferguson took over something of an empty shell in 1986, a club living on fading memories of the Busby era, as much about tabloid notoriety as football achievement.

With a ferocity that many found difficult to live with, he removed the drinking culture that he found, got rid of some outstanding players who had lost their way, confined the media to the fringes of the club's business, resurrected the club's youth development system, built a professional training and coaching system still unsurpassed in England, and demanded and got (as the price of being at the club) a unity of purpose and clarity of focus that turned talented players into winners.

Perhaps his greatest achievement has been that he has managed to blend the demands of a more tactical and defensive modern game with the attacking verve and individual swagger established by Busby as the United way of playing, a way that made a provincial club the best supported team in the world.

It was a challenge that defeated previous United managers (including even Busby in his late years) but Ferguson's teams have managed to provide plenty of scope for individual expression within the framework of team organization.

Thus, players like Cantona, Giggs, Rooney, Ronaldo, Scholes, Sharpe, Yorke, Cole, Beckham, Anderson and others have developed into artists who could stretch the imagination of those lucky enough to watch them while they still played winning football.

These skills have been paraded through four successful United teams built by Ferguson.

If the first (1990-2) was something of a transitional side, the other three - 1993-4, 1999-2001 and 2006-8 - have all been great ones.

The treble in 1999 must rank that side as the greatest of them, indeed as the greatest in English club history, not only for the magnitude of the success but also for the flair and style with which it was done. It exemplified what all Ferguson's teams are about - skill and flair embedded in a high level of organization and a ferocious team spirit.

All this makes Fergie something more than a successful coach and places him in the ranks of those great managers who can 'build a club', as the saying goes, men like Michels, Stein, Shankly, Clough, Nicholson, Wenger.

In this company, Busby stands supreme: we cannot begin to imagine what it took to turn a bankrupt, provincial club without a stadium into one renowned throughout the world, to change the idea of football in favour of youth and flair, to drag English football into Europe, to resurrect the club after the Munich air crash (by contrast, Torino have never recovered fully after losing their great team in a 1949 air crash) and to win the European Cup just a decade after Munich.

Yet Ferguson, too, belongs here, adapting the Busby legacy to new realities and taking the club to new heights.

It is only in his relations with the media that Fergie can be considered less than successful. If it is true he has had to deal with a more unscrupulous and contemptible press than any that Busby, Shankly or Stein faced, it is also true that his constant conflicts with them have done neither himself nor his club any favours. It has encouraged a sustained campaign against the club by the London media so that United's enormous contribution to the community and to Unicef and other charities gets a Chinese-government type media blackout !!! It has also led to a media caricature of Fergie with little basis in reality but with a life of its own.

The ranting bully terrorizing his players does not square with their fierce loyalty to him or with their unshakeable will to win games from seemingly hopeless positions or with the flair and joy they so often bring to their play.

Nor does it square with the esteem in which he is held throughout football, or with the appreciation by other managers of the support and generosity he accords them or, for that matter, with the help and friendship he has extended to individual journalists facing crises in their lives.

The wealth and fame he has achieved in football, and the political and business circles to which he has access as a result, have not altered his friendships, most of which go back to his youth, or his focus on family ties or his social values.

Perhaps that is a truer reflection of the nature of the beast than the media picture......

AND MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, ONCE HE'S RETIRED AND NO LONGER THREATENS THEM THEY WILL FINALLY GIVE HIM HIS FULL DUE !!!

Wayne's Wages And Coleen's Cash Revealed

Mr and Mrs Rooney are up in arms because the amount of cash they really earn has been revealed in detail. The Manchester United striker and his wife – together worth around £35million – are locked in a bitter court battle with sports agency Proactive.

Rooney has several lucrative deals going on at the moment ON TOP of his basic £90,000 per week for playing at United. He has £760,000 twice yearly for his image rights (seems a tad expensive to me, no offence Roon). He also rakes in £1million a year from Nike, £118,689.57 twice a year from computer games giant EA and has made £3.55million so far from a 12-year, five-book deal.

Former supermarket checkout girl Coleen has earned £283,334 for an eight-book deal. That must be rivetting stuff all about her journey from the checkout to WAG but hey, if people buy it good luck to her. The 22-year-old also pockets £41,667 a month for her column in OK!, £13,000 for each of the 10 episodes of her Coleen’s Real Women TV show and £5,000 a month for her column in Closer. £41,667 a month for a column in OK is incredible. I just wish someone would pay me 10% of that for writing this blog, it's quite time consuming. I can't say I've ever read her column to be honest.

Also laid bare in the papers filed at a Leeds court were the cost of their wedding which included £18,933.97 for Wayne’s stag week in Ibiza and £2,622 for a first class return flight to New York for Coleen’s assistant to collect designer jewellery. I would have spent £10 on postage but there you go, maybe that would have been too easy.

Proactive claims it is owed two months’ commission by the couple. It also says Wayne owes nearly £19,000 for using its credit card to cover stag weekend bills. A spokesman confirmed a writ was served. He said: “We tried to resolve this and it’s regrettable we had to take this course of action.” A spokesman for the Rooneys said: “Wayne and Coleen are angry that this has gone to court.” I find it most amusing how these modern day footballers try and cream all the cash they can from the media. One example is the fee the Rooney's grabbed for their wedding photos, believed to be £1m...then they moan and complain when the media publish things like this. Take the rough with the smooth I say, you can't have your cake and eat it. If you thrust yourself into the limelight as they always do, then be prepared for things like this to happen.

WAYNE'S CASH

* £90,000 a week (basic) from Manchester United

* £760,000 every six months from the club for image rights

* £1m a year from Nike

* £118,689.57 twice a year from EA Games, right

* £600,000 for a four-year contract with Coca-Cola

* £3.55m for a five-book, 12-year deal

COLEEN’S CASH

* £41,667 a month for a column in OK! magazine

* £13,000 per episode (10 in total) of model search show, Coleen’s Real Women

* £5,000 a month for her column in Closer magazine

* £283,334 for an eight-book deal

* £50,000 in royalties from her first two books

This Could Be The 'Defining' Moment

manchester united winner sunderland nemanja vidicEvery time anyone wins the league title there is a moment in time you can look back on and say 'that's where we won it'. Well I think Saturday's game against Sunderland will be 'that' moment for Manchester United this year.

Nemanja Vidic has labelled his last-gasp match-winner against Sunderland as the most important goal he has scored for Manchester United. He has only scored eight but this one stands out the most.

The raucous celebrations that greeted Vidic's late tap-in after Michael Carrick's long-range shot had been deflected on to a post suggested the resulting 1-0 Barclays Premier League win could be one of the key moments in the entire campaign.

After witnessing Liverpool and Chelsea drop home points unexpectedly over the past fortnight, it would have been a major anti-climax if Sir Alex Ferguson's side had done so as well. If United had then drawn their match it would have left United in bad shape compared to Liverpool and Chelsea. Instead, a squad lacking Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra - and almost certainly Cristiano Ronaldo - will head to Tottenham next Saturday still trailing the top two by six and five points respectively, boasting a game in hand and in relatively good shape.

"How important was it?" asked a smiling Vidic. "Just look at my reaction. It is not my favourite goal - but it is my most important one. At this time in the season, you need to win every game. Sunderland did not make it easy because they defended with 11 men all the time. We didn't have that many clear chances but we never gave up - and in the end, we got our reward."

There was a price to pay, though, Wayne Rooney picked up his fifth booking of the season which rules him out of the White Hart Lane trip along with Evra, who will start what amounts to a five-match ban. More problematic is the hip injury Ronaldo sustained that was so painful the newly-crowned Ballon D'Or winner simply kicked the ball out of play and headed for the tunnel when he realised there was no chance of continuing.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United's Evra Receives Four Match Ban

patrice evra ban manchester unitedManchester United's Patrice Evra has been banned for four matches and fined £15,000 after the hearing into last season's post-match altercation with a groundsman at Stamford Bridge.

The FA found the Manchester United defender guilty of improper conduct.

A United statement called the ban "excessive" and Evra will miss four matches commencing from 22 December. Chances are they will appeal the decision anyway.

Chelsea were fined £25,000 for failing to ensure an employee conducted himself in an orderly fashion. The FA said charges that groundsman Sam Bethell had used racially abusive language towards Evra after the match could not be proven.

Manchester United left a statement on their website: "Manchester United note the announcement from the FA and are disappointed with the decision and in particular consider the sanctions against Patrice Evra excessive. Manchester United and Patrice will consider all options once there has been an opportunity to digest the full reasons for the decision. There will be no further comment."

The hearing in London finished on Friday and was attended by officials from both clubs, with the cases being heard separately by the FA's regulatory commission. Evra and his team-mates were asked to move while warming down, sparking the row after last season's 2-1 league defeat in April. Evra, Gary Neville, Park Ji-Sung, Danny Wellbeck, John O'Shea and Paul Scholes - who did not feature in the match - were running on the field in a warm-down about 30 minutes after the final whistle when the trouble broke out.

The Frenchman and Bethell were pictured having a confrontation following the incident, with Bethell raising a fist towards Evra while being held back by two Chelsea staff members.

The FA said Evra had struck Bethell on the side of the head, and that the player admitted to pushing a different groundsman with his chest..... Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Face Derby In Carling Cup Semi-Final

Burnley have been given the chance to take down a big club when they were drawn against Spurs in the Carling Cup Quarter Final draw. So far, Burnley have knocked out Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal in their quest to win the trophy.

Manchester United were left to play Derby County in the other semi final. Derby did actually claim a Premier League scalp in the shape of Stoke City in the last round as did Manchester United. Derby beating Stoke and United 5-3 victors over Blackburn Rovers.

The matches will be played in the weeks beginning 5 and 19 January 2009. The final takes place at Wembley on Sunday, 1 March.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

No Manchester United Players Are Going On Loan Now

Just to support the article preceding this one it has transpired that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out allowing any of his young players to move out on-loan. With United still fighting on FIVE front for yet more trophies (EPL, WCC, Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup) Sir Alex knows that with a possible fixture pile up and the prospect of 8 games coming up in 26 days in the new year it is United who need the players and NOT other clubs.

He said: "The one good thing is that we've got a big strong squad, I won't be letting anyone else out on loan and I want to keep everyone together because I'm going to need them. It's all about taking their chance when it comes and they have done that and I'm pleased with that but more importantly it adds to my squad when we're coming in the second half of the season. We've got something like eight games in 26 days and I've got the squad to cope with that. It's a great bonus we've got now."

Ferguson has a lot of faith in young players like Danny Welbeck, Rodrigo Possebon and Rafel da Silva and believes they are capable of making an impact at United.

He added: "Playing against Middlesbrough, QPR and against Blackburn, we learnt something from them, their temperament, their ability to play in front of the crowd at Old Trafford. They're never phased, that's the important thing. These young players have come through well."

Good news indeed. Not just for us as fans who want to see these guys develop and grow into future super stars but brilliant news for the players themselves. They play at the biggest club in the world and I'm sure they would rather pull on the famous red jersey during their time at the Academy.

Nurturing youth and giving youngsters their chance is how Sir Matt did it. The birth of the Busby babes announced the real arrival of faith in youth systems and Sir Alex has reinforced that with his management methods. We must continue this system, not just for Sir Matt or Sir Alex but for Manchester United as a whole.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Discard Feeder Clubs

Manchester United have been streamlining their partnership clubs. In the past they have had a whole host of 'Feeder Clubs'. This provides a mutually beneficial mtwo way agreement whereby Manchester United get first choice on the young talent coming through the ranks at these feeder clubs and in exchange United send all their 'loan players' to play at these clubs which has it's obvious rewards.

United have just struck a deal with Brazil's Desportivo Brasil and maintain a strong relationship with Royal Antwerp.

United had tie-ups around the globe with Brommapojkarna in Sweden, Oslo Ost in Norway, Parramatta Eagles in Australia, FC Fortune in South Africa and Nantes in France to name a few.

However, none of the links proved a success and now all have been discarded.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Micheal Shields Hoping For Justice Today

micheal shields liverpool bulgaria attempted murder trialMicheal Shields has his hearing today and his parents are to have a meeting with Jack Straw who DOES have the power to free him despite saying he doesn't. The Bulgarian Prime Minister has sent a memo to Mr Straw saying it is up to Britain whether or not he is freed.

I come from Eastern Europe and I will be the first to admit our court systems are dreadful. It stems from the communist era when they would grab the nearest person to the crime, try them and convict them, never mind the evidence and it happens today, though many will deny this.

I've read a lot about this case and it's clear to anyone with half a brain that Micheal is innocent.

Liverpool fan yes, I know, but at times like this he is a FOOTBALL fan first and foremost just like all of us......Micheal, You'll Never Walk Alone !!!

Any United fans who don't like this post then cast your minds back to the United fans, the "Roma Four" who were unfairly jailed in Italy. I saw hundreds and hundreds of Liverpool fans show support for them and some even sent donations to the fund !!!!

This is from the official website, go show support for the guy - MICHAEL SHIELDS will serve out the rest of his prison sentence in Britain after judges in Bulgaria agreed to reduce his 15-year prison sentence by five years but refused to order a full re-trial for his conviction of attacking a barman. Send your messages of support for Michael.

Manchester United 'v' Chelsea In A Disciplinary Hearing This Time

manchester united racism charges patrice evra chelsea fa hearingToday is the day the FA have a lot of pressure on them. They will be holding a hearing into the 'Battle of Stamford Bridge' from last year. After the game, which United lost 2-1, there was a twenty man brawl involving Patrice Evra and a number of other players and the Chelsea groundstaff.

Evra was charged with improper conduct after his part in the melee.

Chelsea groundsman Sam Bethell was accused by at least one member of the United group of using racist language towards Evra, though the player has never claimed he heard that. It has been said that United Assistant Manager Mike Phelan is the one to make these accusations.

Bethell has not been charged because of a technicality, but Chelsea have been charged with failing to ensure the proper conduct of their employee, and failing to inform him in his contract that he was subject to the FA's rules and regulations.

The hearing should last for two days. If anyone is found guilty of racism in any form no matter how small, then the FA really do need to come down like a ton of bricks on the offender. Not just some petty £10,000 fine like they gave Sir Alex earlier this season for his misconduct charge. I reported back then that I thought his punishment was pathetic. The FA need to realise these 'small' sums of cash mean nothing to any footballer or manager and even less to a club as a whole.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Blitz Blackburn As Tevez Scores Four

Manchester United made 10 changes from the side that beat Manchester City 1-0 at the weekend, but they weren't really troubled by a bedraggled Blackburn Rovers until the closing stages of this match.

Carlos Tevez bundled home a free kick as he tussled for posession with Aaron Mokoena put United ahead in the 36th and four minutes later, Nani played a one-two with Tevez before slotting under goalkeeper Paul Robinson. So add one assist to Tevez's four goals. Not surprising really as Tevez was his usual powerhouse with non stop hard work throughout the game.

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy took just three minutes to make an impact after coming off the bench at half time. Roque Santa Cruz flicked on Robinson's deep goal kick, and after outmanoeuvring makeshift centre back Gary Neville, McCarthy fired past Ben Foster however, Tevez quickly restored United's two-goal lead in the 51st and made it 4-1 three minutes later.

Blackburn threatened a late comeback when Matt Derbyshire slotted under Foster in the 84th and McCarthy scored a second in the second minute of injury time.

Tevez further pushed his claims to a regular first-team place by finishing off Rovers before the final whistle when latching onto Anderson's lofted ball forward.

Another major boost for United was the return of midfielder Paul Scholes in the 66th for the first time since damaging knee ligaments in September.

Tevez said of his performance: "I was looking forward to this game and since I have not been playing often and it was a good night and I'm happy with my performance," Tevez said through Brazil midfielder Rodrigo Possebon, who was translating. I'm very proud to score four goals for the first time in my career and to do it in a United shirt."

This match will set up a semi final with either Spurs, who knocked Watford out 1-0, Burnley, victors over Arsenal having already beaten Chelsea or Derby County who got rid of Stoke City.

Vietnam Want Manchester United

man utd vff vietnam football federationThe Vietnam Football Federation is in discussions to pay almost $4million to tempt Manchester United into a pre-season one-off match next year.

Football has been played in Vietnam since the early 20th century, however, due to the war with America, it had not been developed into a movement. The federation was founded in 1962 as Vietnam Football Association. In 1964, it was officially admitted to be affiliated member of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation. Due to the division of Vietnam, football was played differently in the two parts of the country until 1975. In 1989, VFA was renamed to Vietnam Football Association.

The VFF is also targeting Italian giants AC Milan but both deals are far from done.

VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said luring clubs such as Man Utd and Milan to Asia could do great things. As it has done for the Chinese and other Asian Federations.

“This is a huge amount of money but we can arrange it. We can get money from tickets, advertising and broadcasting rights and so on.” he was quote as saying by the Asian Football Federation.

Manchester United have laid down more stringent stringent guidelines than Britney Spears and Mariah Carey combined though, that is if the match actually goes ahead. No advertising would be allowed at the venue whilst the Vietnamese team would only be authorized to wear their names and the national flag on their strips.

Trong Hy said the talks with AC Milan were a lot further advanced than with Manchester United.

"Everything is running well. If AC Milan agrees, the match between the national squad and AC Milan will be held in early September 2009," Trong Hy said.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Ex Manchester United And Celtic Striker Could Be Everton Bound

man utd larssonEverton to sign Henrik Larsson? Sounds ridiculous I know. I thought Henrik had his swansong with Manchester United back in 2006-07 but apparently he is now seeking a position in a professional capacity with a club and has welcomed enquiries.

Larsson is still registered with Helsingborg and at the age of 36 everyone thought that would be his final club.

With this news that Larsson is seeking another club, David Moyes of Everton has been quick to check out the possibility of signing him, after he lost Yakubu for the rest of the season.

Manchester United shocked the football world when they announced that Larsson would be on loan from 1 January until 12 March 2007, coinciding with the Swedish league's off season.

His debut was against Aston Villa in the FA Cup Third Round on 7 January 2007 at Old Trafford, a game in which he scored. Larsson scored his first ever Premier League goal on January 31 in a 4-0 win over Watford, he then scored on his last appearance at Old Trafford in a Manchester United shirt in a 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over Lille on 7 March 2007 to give United a 2-0 win on aggregate.

Whilst Sir Alex Ferguson tried his best to extend the loan period, Larsson stated that he had made a promise to his family and his club to return on 12 March. This was confirmed on 20 February, when Larsson announced that he would not be extending his loan period. Despite this, Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for the striker, who scored 3 goals in 13 matches in all competitions during his 3 month stay, saying, "He's been fantastic for us, we tried everything we could to get him to stay longer, but he made a promise and you have to respect that."

Larsson made his final appearance for United on Saturday 10 March in a 6th Round FA Cup tie away to Middlesboro, ending in a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United won the Premier League two months after Larsson had left the club, and although he had not played the required quota of 10 league games to qualify for a Premier League winners medal, he, alongside Alan Smith, was granted special dispensation by the Premier League after the club requested for extra medals for the two.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Keeper Prepared To Wait

man utd blog ben fosterBen Foster has not had the best of luck regarding his first team chances at Manchester United. He was out on loan at Watford for a full season and upon his return missed virtually all of last season with a cruciate ligament injury. Despite this, he is still willing to wait his turn and take his chance when it comes. He is often mentioned as a potential player to be included in each and every England squad.

Edwin Van der Sar has started to show his age with a few uncharacteristic mistakes and there is a possibility that either Tomasz Kuszcak or Ben Foster could force their way into contention, with the latter prepared to play a patient waiting game.

Talking to Setanta Sports Foster said: "I have got to take any chance that I am given, United are in a lot of competitions, like the Carling Cup, which gives the manager a chance to make changes. There are also other Premier League games where he might rotate a little bit and give either myself or Tomasz a chance. I just have to get my head down and keep doing the same things in training. Then if my chance comes along, hopefully I will be ready to take it."

"Yes, it probably is harder when you only come in for one game every few weeks. When you are the established number one keeper, you know you are going to be playing, you know what to expect and you can tailor your week to prepare. When you don't know whether you are going to be playing, or even involved, it is hard to prepare, you have to be professional, do the right things in training and be ready when the call comes."

Foster's attitude is rare to see these days. Put someone on the bench for too long and it doesn't take them long to begin the 'crying game' and demanding first team chances. I rate Foster higher than Kuszczak who has the ability to make me nervous every time a cross or corner is aimed any where near him.

Is Foster a future England goalkeeper?

I think so, yes.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo Wins The Ballon D'Or

cristiano ronaldo ballon d'orManchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo won the European Footballer of the Year Award in France on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Portuguese star is the first from his country to win the coveted 'Ballon D'Or' award which is given by 'France Football' since Luis Figo in 2000.

CR7 has spoken often about his chances of winning this despite protestations from opposing fans. At one point he actually declared himself not only the best footballer in the world but second and third too.

He scored a remarkable 42 times in 49 matches as United secured a memorable league and European Cup double.

Lionel Messi finished in second place with Fernando Torres in third.

This award has been Presented since 1956 by the French football magazine France Football, it is awarded to the player considered to have performed best over the previous year;. The first to lift this honour was Blackpool player Stanley Matthews.

Prior to 2007, the player had to be a member of a club based within UEFA's jurisdiction in order to qualify for selection; and until 1995 a player also had to be of European nationality to be eligible. The 2007 change in rules saw players from Qatar, the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina named on the shortlist alongside those from European clubs.

Since October 2007, 96 football journalists from around the world have decided the winner from a shortlist of 50 compiled by France Football.

Add this title to the fact Manchester United are current Premier League Champions and Champions of Europe things look rosy right now. Ronaldo is also favourite for the World Player of the Year too.....and I don't think many will argue with that!

Can Manchester United also go on to win the World Club Cup in Tokyo too ? The mind boggles.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Did Manchester United Make The £17m Bid ?

As I previously reported, Manchester United have been taking a long hard look at Axel Witsel, the young Standard Liege midfielder. However, it now appears insist that they have no plans to sell Witsel in January. In fact, they are claiming they have actually turned down a bid of £17m.

There are a number of clubs checking on the progress of Witsel but they have not revealed who the bid came from. Despite interest from Italy, France and Spain, it is the host of Premier League clubs who look keenest.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bolton and Middlesbrough have all been linked to him or they have been seen watching him but Standard's vice-president Luciano D'Onofrio has sent out a clear message that Witsel is not for sale and they have turned down a huge offer for him.

"I had a bid of €20million for Witsel and it was refused, it is not even a question."

I very much doubt it is Manchester United who launched the bid. OK, if we could get Witsel for a cut down price of around £10m then fine, he is a great prospect but I doubt United will be involved in a bidding war for him come January......Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

The Manchester United Almanac

This Weeks Book Review:
The Official Manchester United Almanac
Written by: John D. T. White Foreward by: Sir Alex Ferguson CBE

You've worn the shirt, you've witnessed the drama and
now it's time to uncover the great legacy that lies
behind Manchester United.

In the new and revised Manchester United
biographic dedicated to the past leg-
ends of the club, John D.T white serves up his
latest instalment

'The Official Manchester United Almanac'

with a comprehensive overview of the reds
ground breaking success both in Euro-
pean and domestic competition. In his fifth
book about United, this offers an in depth
look at the players, movers and shakers
down the years whose skills have
graced the Old Trafford turf.

Foreworded by Sir Alex Ferguson himself,
this book offers those who truly bleed
red the ultimate United experience to
feel a part of the club's illustrious history
with a look at the winning philosophy
adopted by legendary manager Sir Matt
Busby that moulded the club's youth
academy and became the pillar of their
success, marking a club tradition and
identity still upheld today.

Whether it's Norman Whiteside making
history in an FA Cup final or King Eric's poetic
justice of the mid 1990's, Reds fanatics
are sure to be overwhelmed by this chrono-
logical account of events which is tracked
over twelve calendar months. This timeless
documentation of all there is to know
about United will please all readers as White
blends past and present events to underpin
the Old Trafford club's unchanging identity
without limiting its genius to 'beginning'
and 'end' as most club biographies do.

Undoubtedly the book touches on the
most pivotal moments which shaped the club's
legacy - from their formation as a Newton
Heath FC to the euphoria of their first ever
English league triumph, which would set
a precedent for future success. It also feat-
ures a moving account of the victims of
the Munich air disaster on February 6 1958
to which the book is dedicated.

However, the downside to this book is
the absence of Manchester United's Champions
League final triumph in May 2008. The
climatic end to a hard fought race with arch rivals
Chelsea for an unprecedented double,
which came to the boil in a scintillating encounter
in Moscow. The game which ended in an
epic penalty shoot victory for United was arg-
uably the most poigniant tribute to the
Bubsy babes on the 50th anniversary year of the
disaster, but is not included here.

Regardless of the books notable misgivings,

Burnley In Chase For Manchester United Defender

Manchester United's Scottish full back David Gray is wanted by Burnley boss Owen Coyle.

Gray was born on 4 May 1988 in Edinburgh. He came up through the ranks at Hearts until he was sixteen and was then signed by Manchester United for £50,000. He has also had a spell with Crewe Alexandra. Gray has also been a part of the Scotland Under-21 squad.

Two years ago Gray broke into the reserve team, being used mainly at right-back, coming from the bench. On 25 October 2006, Gray made his debut for the senior team in a League Cup match against Crewe Alexandra. He started the game at right-back, but late in the second half, he was substituted for Kieran Lee who went on to score the winning goal in extra time.

In January 2007, he was sent on loan to Royal Antwerp, who are a 'feeder' club for Manchester United, hence a lot of our reserves and youngsters end up with a Dutch spell in their United career. However, after just two games, he suffered an injury which sidelined him for the rest of the season. In November 2007, he again went on loan, this time to Crewe Alexandra for a month, as cover for the club's injured players.....Back To Home Page...Bookmark and Share

Manchester United Take The Honours As Rooney Notches Up His Ton

man utd ronaldo handballA couple of years ago Manchester City launched an advertising campaign that claimed: ‘This is Our City'. Well I got news for them, no it isn't.

Any Manchester City supporters who were thinking of their new found wealth and how they can compete on an even playing field with United can forget it. At least in the short term it wont be happening. This game just highlighted the gulf between the two teams.

Manchester United are the real thing, the finished article, Champions of England and Champions of Europe and City are "under construction" so to speak.

City were simply out played and players such as Rooney, Carrick, Da Silva and Fletcher stood out but my man of the match was Ji-Sung Park, or 'Three Lung Park' as he is affectionately known. How that guy can cover so much ground and just never give up is remarkable. It was the efforts of Ji-Sung Park that actually lead to the goal.

He was chasing around the 18 yard box for the ball, snapping at the ankles of the City players and eventually he got the ball and passed it wide to Carrick who shot across goal and Rooney fired in the rebound from Jo Hart's save. This was Rooney's 100th club goal and the game was the 150th Manchester derby.

Park never gets much praise but he is a great squad player and today his effort and work rate were second to none.

As for City's superstars Robinho and Micah Richards, did they actually play, I didn't notice.

The Ronaldo sending off will remain a mystery to me. He ran in to try and connect with Rooney's corner, he was at least 3 feet higher than any other player with a clear header on goal and he parried the ball away with his hands. Why would he do that ?

When the dust settled, though, United’s win was undeniably just.

For now, at least, United remain - in Rooney’s words - the "Kings of Manchester".
