History Of Manchester United's Kit - The 1950s
1955~1959 - Manchester United Home Shirt
As well as the white-collar button up red jersey, United
also wore this V-necked classic strip for some games
during the 1955-56 season. The kit became a perman-
ent choice during the 1956-57 season by The Busby Babes.
Whilst normally worn with shorts and black socks the kit
consisted of red shirt, red shorts and red socks when
United met Real Madrid in the 1956-57 European Cup
Semi-Final.
1956~1961 - Manchester United Away Shirt
Manchester United wore this reverse of the home kit
from the 1956-57 seaon against the likes of Liverpool
and Arsenal.
1957 - Manchester United FA Cup Final Shirt
After winning the league title, The Busby Babes were fav-
ourites to become the first club to clinch the double since
the 1800s. However, a controversial challenge on United's
Ray Wood left the goalkeeper concussed with a broken
cheekbone. Down to ten men, with Jackie Blanchflower in
goal and Duncan Edwards in the middle of the defence.
United were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa despite a goal from
Tommy Taylor. This was the white away strip they wore
that day. They wore all white shorts and socks.
1958 - Manchester United FA Cup Final Shirt
Just 3 months after the Munich air disaster, United returned
to Wembley in this red kit for the 1958 FA Cup Final. All the
sympathies were with a makeshift United side, whose hopes
rested on Munich survivors Bobby Charlton, Dennis Viollet,
Bill Foulkes and Harry Gregg. Unfortunately, their opponents
that day, Bolton Wanderers, had other ideas and beat United
2-0 in one of the most controversial finals ever.
1959 ~ 1961 - Manchester United Home Shirt
For the 1950-1960 season, Manchester United continued
to wear the classic red kit with a white V-neck collar, how-
ever they changed from wearing black socks to all white
ones.
